(CHRISM NEWS/ MARIS BENTLEY) Taking my cue from Cardinal Raymond Burke during his recent address in Ireland, and with Saint Catherine of Siena as further inspiration, I am going to write a letter to Pope Francis regarding my concerns about the recent Synod of Bishops in Rome, and in anticipation of the next Synod scheduled for October of 2015. I urge all faithful Catholics to join me in doing so.

Satan is now, and always has been, working to destroy the Church – which is both the Body of Christ and His Bride. Yet, the attacks seem to have intensified, leaving many of us wondering what is going on. Confusion and discord abound, which are always the work of the evil one.

According to the UK Catholic newspaper, the Catholic Herald, Cardinal Burke, in his address to over 300 delegates at a marriage and family conference in Limerick, “...has urged Pope Francis to take the issues of Communion for the divorced and remarried, cohabitation and same-sex marriage 'off the table' for next year’s Synod of Bishops.”

A knowledgeable source recently shared with me the following: as a Jesuit, Pope Francis is following the Jesuit way of putting everything out there on the table for discussion. Perhaps that works in other settings. Perhaps that worked at a different time in history. But, it’s not working now.

Does it make sense to put on the table, or appear to be putting on the table, the doctrinal teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church? Even if the goal is to develop a more pastoral approach to the living out of the doctrine, what is happening is, instead, harmful to the institutional Church and to the millions of souls he is charged with shepherding.

Please, write to the Pope. Send a copy of your letter to your priest, your Bishop, and the Apostolic Nuncio (the Pope’s ambassador). Share your concerns, and especially your own personal testimony of how the contraceptive, anti-life mentality of the world – including promiscuity, divorce, abortion, pornography, and the aggressive homosexual agenda – has affected your own life, and the lives of those you love. Write of the importance of fidelity to Jesus Christ and all of His teachings. Write of the spiritual battle that is waging—the battle for souls.

Pray, and fast, and write to the Pope. Will it make a difference? I don’t know, only God knows that. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you write. Pray for the intercession of the angels and saints; they will help you. Don’t hesitate. Don’t delay. And remember the words of St. Augustine, “Pray as if everything depends on God; work as if everything depends on you.”

Don't forget, include your phone number…..you may just get a call!

His Holiness, Pope Francis
